Good morning, Reading. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 28th of January.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Berks County Public Library System & Bern Township officials installed a book vending machine at the jail to supply free books to children visiting loved ones. Visitors receive a token to choose from over 230 titles, making visits more engaging and comforting.  Reading Eagle
  • Local HVAC and plumbing technicians advise residents to insulate homes and clear snow from outdoor units during today's cold snap (experts note that even small drafts can freeze pipes and block heating).  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading native Danny Gardner will star as Lumiere in ‘Disney’s Beauty and the Beast’ at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music from Feb. 11 to 22 (he will host a Q&A with Reading School District students after the 1:30 p.m. matinee on Feb. 12).  Reading Eagle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Reading’s energy project is at its midpoint as city officials complete lighting, HVAC, and envelope upgrades at municipal sites and plan solar installations to start this spring (weather permitting), with work finishing by September to cut long-term costs and guide Reading toward 100% renewable energy by 2050.  Reading Eagle
  • Today, freezing temperatures have made clearing snow challenging for residents in Topton, Centerport, and Mohrsville — sidewalks and roads are icy as the snow shifts from light flurries to sleet and ice while children still find time to play.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Authorities in Exeter Township warned drivers that leaving snow and ice on vehicles is illegal and dangerous. The rule, under a law enacted in 2022, applies to all vehicles including trucks + buses to reduce injury risks from falling debris.  WFMZ-TV
  • Central Berks Regional Police Chief Ray Serafin, after over 40 years of service including roles from sergeant to chief, is set to retire in early February. Community members and local leaders praised his work in modernizing regional policing while he looks forward to more time with family (and golf).  WFMZ-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Fire officials in Reading warned residents to keep three feet away from portable heaters and avoid using ovens for heat as bitter cold persists. They advised plugging heaters directly into wall outlets, and local shelters (Opportunity House, Hope Rescue Mission) remain available for those needing warmth.  WFMZ-TV
  • Miller-Keystone Blood Center needs extra blood and platelet donations after recent snowstorms disrupted drives and shortened donor center hours; the center (2745A Leiscz’s Bridge Road in Bern Township) is hosting a Bring a Friend campaign with a $25 gift card for both donors through Feb. 28.  Reading Eagle
