- ➤ Today, the Ice and Spice Fest returns to West Reading with live ice carvings on Penn Avenue from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., featuring 35 sculptures and special deals that boost local businesses. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ St. John’s (Hains) UCC at 591 N. Church Road will host a free community concert on Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. featuring Simple Gifts with strings, banjo and dulcimer in Lower Heidelberg Township. Reading Eagle
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Snow emergency declarations are in effect in Berks County as crews cleared last weekend’s snow for an approaching storm. The storm will bring heavy snow and mixed precipitation from today (7:00 p.m.) until Monday, making travel difficult. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection awarded $416,031 to Berks Conservation District for a multi-project stream and floodplain enhancement along Cacoosing Creek as part of the 2025 Growing Greener round. Recipients must complete projects over three years & the work will reduce flooding and improve habitat. Berks Weekly

- ➤ Abraxas Academy in New Morgan is now housing undocumented migrant teens in a separate wing following a $9 million federal award (granted in August) to Abraxas Alliance, with Caernarvon Township police noting the facility (which handled 50 incidents in 2025) left them unprepared for the federal move. - ➤ Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital named local resident Izzy Rivera (Wernersville) its 2026 Miracle Champion. - ➤ Food safety inspectors reviewed several vendors between Jan. 7 and Jan. 20 in Reading (including surrounding areas) and found rodent droppings at one establishment along with signs of rodent activity and expired food items on sale. Updated reports will be posted every other week to ensure vendors address the violations. Reading Eagle
