CULTURE NEWS

  • Seven in Seven features a diverse lineup of concerts for the upcoming week including Gutter Sinatra performing Friday at World Cafe Live and acts like Daffo and Hannah Jadagu playing Saturday at local venues. Badfish will rock next Thursday at Ardmore Music Hall — promising a week of live music.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Reading School District held a public hearing on Wednesday night for a $41 million renovation and addition at 12th and Marion Elementary School and will accept written comments until Feb. 20. District officials say the project will update the building for 775 students with new spaces including a dining commons and gym.  WFMZ-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Tuesday’s meeting, the airport authority awarded a $2.36 million site-prep contract to Kinsley Construction for hangar projects at Bern Township airfield. Director Zackary Tempesco said Gaming and Leisure Properties will build its own 24,000 sqft hangar, so the authority will rebid the two remaining projects as USDA funding develops.  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Reading Hospital teams visited key community sites today to check on vulnerable residents during the extreme cold. The Street Medicine program provided free health care, delivered sleeping bags (and supplies), and asked for community donations.  WFMZ-TV
  • Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center will expand pediatric surgical care by partnering with Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital at the Bern Township hospital (Berks County). The collaboration will offer pre-surgical appointments as well as general and gastrointestinal surgery for local families.  WFMZ-TV
  • Nearly 700 homes and businesses in Amity Township lost power during extreme cold weather; first responders advise residents to use space heaters and electric blankets safely and keep emergency kits available as conditions remain cold this weekend (follow local guidelines).  WFMZ-TV
  • Pennsylvania will continue following existing vaccine guidelines as part of the Northeast Public Health Collaborative, which announced on Monday that it would stick with AAP guidance. Local health officials say this approach helps keep children safe and gives clear, trusted information for families.  Reading Eagle

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Renovations at the First Reformed Church on Washington Street have uncovered historic marble altar pieces said to stem from a merged church group (Baer Chapel). Developer Alan Shuman of Shuman Development Group said an open house planned for May will preview the church's transformation into a wedding venue and event space.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Eastern Pennsylvania high school boys basketball rankings by Toomey Anderson show team standings across 6A to A; Riverside leads Class 3A with sophomore Nico Antoniacci reaching 1,000 career points, and league tournaments start Feb. 6 while the state tournament begins March 6 at Hershey’s Giant Center.  Reading Eagle
  • Tuesday night, Muhlenberg defeated Gov. Mifflin 59-43 — Armstrong scored 18, Malave 13, and Hemmings 11. Exeter beat Daniel Boone 63-36 and will play at Wilson on Thursday night.  Reading Eagle
