  • On Monday, families at Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Shillington and volunteers at New Journey Community Outreach in Reading honored MLK Day with service - volunteer efforts included making over 500 sandwiches, planting Seeds of Change, and creating a community art mural.  WFMZ-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Legacy Cigar Lounge in West Reading has closed permanently at 559 Penn Ave. Owners Rick and Adrean Turner thanked patrons for creating a space for community connections + celebrations during its nearly 2 1/2 years in operation.  Reading Eagle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twin Valley High School senior Sloane Wolfe was chosen to represent Pennsylvania at the United States Senate Youth Program Washington Week — scheduled for March 7–14 — and will travel to Washington, D.C. to earn a $10,000 college scholarship.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, Jan. 24 the Pennsylvania Game Commission will vote on a land swap trading 55 acres of game lands for 614 acres of property, fueling worries it may lead to a new data center proposal in Linfield as lawmakers urge residents to oppose the swap (and protect wildlife habitat).  Reading Eagle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu cases in Berks County peaked after the holidays and have dropped this week, though experts warn they could rise again before flu season ends. Local health officials urge those unvaccinated to get their flu shot and practice good hygiene.  Reading Eagle
  • Residents shoveling Monday’s icy sidewalks in Reading are warned by a Tower Health doctor that quick increases in heart rate—up to 85% of maximum—and potential strains can occur, especially for older adults. Experts advise proper stretching, warm clothing, and careful technique before starting.  WFMZ-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Metropolitan Development Group presented a sketch plan Monday night for a 232-unit apartment complex at 3925 Perkiomen Ave in Exeter. Town planners gave feedback on parking and connectivity as the developer will consider comments for future steps.  WFMZ-TV

  • On Monday night, Berks Catholic defeated Wilson 50-38 in a BCIAA Division 1 boys basketball game. All-State guard Kingston McKoy scored 22 points as the Saints improved to a 12-2 record.  Reading Eagle
