- ➤ Penn State Berks is hosting Inspire the Night tonight at Redner's Event Center to raise funds for pediatric cancer research (aiming for over $20,000), and the venue will also host Dance for a Cure Winter Formal later to support kids battling leukemia. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ Berks County farmers, students, and growers participated at the Pennsylvania Farm Show at the PA Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg from Jan. 10 to Jan. 17. They showcased livestock, restored tractors and unique exhibits that celebrate the region's agricultural legacy. Berks Weekly
- ➤ Humane Pennsylvania in Reading is featuring two adoptable pets—Hondo, a gentle seven-year-old who prefers a calm home, and White Fang, a one-year-old mix needing structure and exercise—as part of this week’s Furry Friends series. WFMZ-TV
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A two-alarm fire damaged several homes in Reading yesterday — displacing 10 residents and sending two firefighters to the hospital with minor injuries. WFMZ-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ YMCA of Reading & Berks County received a $6,000 contribution from Orrstown Bank through the EITC program to support early learning initiatives. The funds will provide scholarships, classroom supplies, and staff training at its Reading and Richmond centers. Reading Eagle
- ➤ Alvernia University received 120 laptops from the COVID-19 ARPA Digital Connectivity Technology Program. The devices are available free for students and community members through the Media Suite, Seniors College and the O’Pake Institute to help close the digital divide in Berks County. Berks Weekly
- ➤ Wilson School District hosted a service learning project at Wilson Southern Middle School where middle schoolers packed food and handmade cards for families in need. The district partnered with local groups (Redner's, Helping Harvest, and VOiCEup Berks) to build leadership and empathy skills. WFMZ-TV
- ➤ Wilson School District held a Bulldogs Give Back event on Friday, Jan. 16 at Wilson High School where students packed lunch bags for over 4,300 food-insecure children. The district partnered with Helping Harvest and local vendors to teach the importance of community service. Reading Eagle
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Reading, Upper Bern Township and Wyomissing signed full-service animal control contracts with ARL for 2026 — the agreements enable residents to access services during scheduled hours, while eight other municipalities opted for fee-for-service arrangements based on dog counts. Reading Eagle
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Berks Community Health Center added four new providers in the second half of 2025. Emma Cooper joined the pediatric team at Rockland while Manifay Sesay returned to primary care and Madu Gabriel + Angelina Menard joined at the 838 Penn St. location. Berks Weekly
