COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Allemaengel 250 Committee will host a free, all-ages party at Kempton Community Center on April 11 to mark the nation's 250 anniversary. The celebration will feature programs that share local history from five townships (Albany, Lynn, Heidelberg, Weisenberg, and Lowhill).  Reading Eagle
  • Community members gathered at GoggleWorks to honor loved ones lost to gun violence — using art and nature to create a space for healing in Reading.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Reading Public Museum will host Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks from Jan. 31 to May 17 in its Second Floor Temporary Galleries. Guests can join a Member Preview (9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Jan. 31) and enjoy interactive STEAM activities using over 200,000 LEGO bricks.  Berks Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Exeter Township School District has partnered with the local food pantry by hosting it in the Lausch Administration Building since spring 2021. The arrangement helps feed 200 to 350 families each month while giving high school students community service opportunities.  Reading Eagle
  • Saint Francis Classical Catholic Academy was named Top Classical Catholic Academy 2025 by Education Insider Magazine, recognizing its strong commitment to a Christ-centered classical education. The school will host an Open House on Sunday, Jan. 25 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Bally.  Reading Eagle
  • Alvernia University received 120 laptops from the COVID-19 ARPA Digital Connectivity Technology Program (a statewide initiative by the PA Broadband Development Authority) to support students, adult learners, and community members through its Media Suite and O’Pake Institute.   • Educators and reading specialists reviewed structured literacy reforms on Monday, Jan. 12 at the Senate Majority Policy Committee hearing. They noted improvements in reading skills and urged extra support (including curriculum resources and literacy coaches) to strengthen future progress.  Berks Weekly
  • Berks Sinfonietta announced the return of its countywide high school scholarship competition, open to grades 10 to 12. Students must submit a video by March 31, and two winners will earn a $500 scholarship and perform on Aug. 22 at Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing.  Berks Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Township officials will meet on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the municipal building to review a forest management plan for Monocacy Hill Recreation Area that includes selective logging to control invasive species; former caretakers say logging may harm trails and wildlife (residents can submit questions via the township website).  Reading Eagle
  • Animal Rescue League of Berks County renewed its animal control contracts with City of Reading, Upper Bern Township, and Wyomissing Borough to provide vital services in 2026. The agency will also offer fee-for-service control for small municipalities with fewer than 15 dogs annually.  Berks Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday, Wyomissing won 45–27 over Oley Valley with Addie Loeb scoring 12 points from 3-pointers—Hamburg, Exeter, and Kutztown also recorded wins in BCIAA contests. This series of games showcased strong team play in local girls basketball matchups.  Reading Eagle
  • Berks Catholic won 68-39 over Conrad Weiser in a BCIAA boys basketball game on Thursday night. Kingston McKoy scored 20 points while Johnny Giesa and Carmelo Harper added 17 and 12, boosting the Saints to an 11-2 record.  Reading Eagle
