COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Animal Rescue League of Berks County reached no-kill status in 2024 by saving more than 90% of the animals at its shelter in Cumru Township at 58 Kennel Road (the no-kill model has been in place since 2018).  Reading Eagle

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Penske Logistics announced a new artificial intelligence platform from Augment after a successful six-month pilot. The system will verify 600,000 loads and is expected to boost productivity by 30 to 40 percent to improve freight tracking.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dreibelbis Farm Historical Society will host a Pennsylvania German ice harvesting demonstration on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Virginville, featuring antique tools, a bonfire, and wagon rides (weather permitting).  Reading Eagle
  • Berks Sinfonietta opened its 2026 season at Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing with Mozart concertos and lesser-known works (including Jane Grey Fantasy) to mix fresh sounds and historic tones. Guest conductor Tyler Readinger led the ensemble as soloists brought emotional depth and refined dialogue on stage.  Berks Weekly
  • Berks Arts announced that the 35th Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest — now extended through April 30 — celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month with events beginning March 19. The fest will conclude with Rick Braun Plays Chuck Mangione at the Miller Center for the Arts on Reading Area Community College’s campus.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Wednesday's hearing, the Reading Zoning Hearing Board reviewed the city's solar canopy request for parking lots at Cedar St. and North Sixth St. It considered a restaurant's plan to extend hours at a former Café Waldorf and approved relief for two business projects — renderings are due before Feb. 11.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Gov. Mifflin’s boys team rolled to a 3-0 win and the girls team won 2-1 in high school bowling on Wednesday at Jay Lanes (with standout series by Wunderlich, Spayd, and Serina Miller), while Wilson swept Antietam in both boys and girls matches at Berks Lanes led by Aiden Hattendorf’s 722 series.  Reading Eagle
  • Reading Fightin Phils will host two drone shows this season—one on Saturday, June 13 after a 6:45 p.m. game against the Portland Sea Dogs to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday, and one on Saturday, Aug. 29 after a game with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies to honor 60 seasons of affiliation.  Reading Eagle
