COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Jewish Federation of Reading donated $15,000 and eight boxes of canned goods to Helping Harvest to meet rising community food needs. Helping Harvest distributed 11.1 million pounds of food last year (its highest record since COVID-19) and says the boost will help serve more neighbors.  WFMZ-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trinity Lutheran Church marked its 50th anniversary of media ministry today — evolving from a small broadcast closet in 1976 to engaging audiences on TikTok and Instagram.  WFMZ-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Exeter High seniors tested a cantilevered truss structure at the Berks County Science Olympiad held at Kutztown University on Thursday, Jan. 8 and led the boomilever category despite a collapse caused by over 8,000-gram weight. Nineteen high schools competed in various STEM events to prepare for regional contests.  Reading Eagle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AmeriStarRail’s plan to launch a high-speed train linking New York to Los Angeles with stops in Reading was rejected by Amtrak for lacking a strong business case. AmeriStarRail still seeks a joint venture & plans to begin service by 2028.  Reading Eagle
  • PennDOT is planning roadway projects in Berks County from January 12 to January 16. Work includes shoulder widening on PA Route 724, brush cutting on several roads, utility work on Haycreek Road until February 13, and bridge repair on U.S. Route 422; motorists should plan for delays.  Berks Weekly

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors report that flu cases are rising in Berks County, with Reading Hospital adding extra beds for patients with respiratory symptoms. The mutated H3N2 strain is causing more infections — doctors advise that getting a flu shot still lessens illness and hospitalizations.  WFMZ-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday night, Reading High lost 85-76 in overtime to unbeaten Central York at Central York High School, with Ryan Brown scoring 22 points and Jostin DeCastro adding 34. The game reached extra time after the teams tied at 70 in regulation.  Reading Eagle
  • On Thursday, Gov. Mifflin boys beat Conrad Weiser 2-1 at Berks Lanes when all five bowlers scored 550 or more for a team total of 2,901 against 2,628. Jayden Breidenstein led with a 610 series while Conrad Weiser’s best was 632.  Reading Eagle
  • Latin Fusion Baseball received a state grant of $60,000 through a check presented by State Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz on Thursday + the youth group will use the funds for its Little League tournament and college scout meetings as it competes in Puerto Rico next month.  WFMZ-TV
  • Wilson High girls won against Exeter 48 to 30 today, with several matches decided by forfeit and fall. Meanwhile, Oley Valley boys beat Kutztown 44 to 24 in a contest featuring key forfeit wins and scoring falls.  Reading Eagle
